Saturday Qualifying

Saturday Qualifying

Scott Pruett took pole position in qualifying, despite a late challenge from Gil de Ferran. The rain paused for the two half-hour sessions, with sun breaking through to dry the track for faster times at the end of the second session.
Parker Johnstone

Local hero Parker Johnstone in his Team Kool Green Reynard-Honda on Firestone tyres was disappointed with his 19th place in qualifying, but did much better in the race, finishing 9th.

Scottish-Italian Dario Franchitti was racing all weekend. The rookie qualified 5th in the Firestone equipped Hogan Racing Reynard/Mercedes-Benz.

Back after his accident in Australia on April 6, Christian Fittipaldi qualified third in his Kmart Budweiser-sponsored Newman-Haas Swift/Ford/Goodyear despite still having a 14-inch steel rod in his right leg.

The Target Twins

The Target Twins, Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi, in their Reynard/Hondas, who just couldn't muster up enough speed to get them any higher than the fourth row of the grid.

Gil de Ferran took his Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard/Honda to within a tenth of a second of Pruett's time.

Veteran driver and team owner Bobby Rahal qualified the Miller Lite Reynard/Ford Cosworth tenth.

Strolling back to our hotel on Saturday night we came across one of Parker's spare cars gracing the lobby of the hotel where Team Green (and many press) were staying.
