On the Track
These are my
photos from around the track at Vancouver. Being a temporary street
circuit built around Concord Place in the heart of the city, a
proliferation of concrete walls and fencing makes it hard to get
unobstructed views. |

Qualifying
After a minor crash during Friday practice, here we see Mark
Blundell qualifying his Motorola Reynard/Mercedes twelfth on Saturday
afternoon.
Bryan Herta in the Shell Reynard/Ford took the sixth spot on the
grid.
Dario Fanchitti lined up tenth in the Hogan Reynard/Mercedes.
Andre Ribeiro could only manage thirteenth in his LCI/Marlboro
Reynard/Honda.
Jimmy Vasser returned to form in Vancouver, getting his set-up
together for third place in qualifying.
Scott Pruett was strong in the race but could only make eleventh
place on the grid in his Brahma Reynard/Ford.
Michael Andretti exits the hairpin and cranks it up for Turn 4 in
his Kmart/Havoline Swift/Ford, qualifying 4th.
Bobby Rahal has been strong in the second half of the season,
qualifying in Vancouver in second place in the Miller Lite
Reynard/Ford.
Vasser leads Christian Fittipaldi on sticker tyres through Turn 2.
But dominating qualifying was Alex Zanardi in the Target
Reynard/Honda. He scooped pole with a 54.025 second lap, ahead of
Rahal's 54.351 and 0.681 miles per hour faster.

Warm-up
Moving on to race warm-up on Sunday morning, Christian in his
Kmart/Budweiser Swift/Ford passes Gualter Salles.
Scott Pruett leads Zanardi, Michel Jourdain and Fittipaldi out of
the pits as they resume the morning warm-up.
Raul Boesel, who struggled to make twelfth in qualifying, but
finished the race sixth, in his Brahma Reynard/Ford.
Paul Tracy had another disastrous weekend. After crashing his
Marlboro Penske/Mercedes during Friday practice, he could only qualify
17th in his spare car on Saturday and then fell out of the race on the
first lap.

The Race
Gil de Ferran on the pace lap in the Valvoline Reynard/Honda. He
went on to finish third after starting seventh.
Star of the race was Alex Zanardi. Making a good start from his
pole position, he started to pull away from the field. However, brake
problems caused him to miss the hairpin twice and we watched in awe as
he worked his way back up from last to finish fourth.
Michael Andretti has won three times in Vancouver, including last
year, but he dropped out on the 71st lap this year after making
contact.
Local favourite Greg Moore had another
luckless weekend, crashing out on lap 63 after qualifying 9th in his
Players/Indeck Reynard/Mercedes.
Race winner Mauricio Gugelmin leading Michael Andretti in the
Hollywood Reynard/Mercedes. "Big Mo" picked up his first win
after starting fifth.
