The Handford Device

He we see the Handford Device on Jimmy Vasser's spare car. Named after its designer, Swift technical director Mark Handford, it's a wing designed to produce significantly more drag and less down-force to slow speeds at the fastest tracks. It was introduced this season at the Michigan and Fontana two-mile ovals.

On our way back through the paddock I had a look for Dayton Indy Lights car 17, driven by my namesake, Paul Jasper.

We found it and took these shots. This was Paul's first Indy Lights race. In 1997 he ran six CART races for the Payton Coyne team. He spent 1998 working for the PacWest team as a development driver for the Champ car and coach to the Indy Lights drivers.

Then out of the nearby trailer stepped the driver. I introduced myself, much to Paul's amusement. He says the team gained some additional sponsorship from Hollywood Video at the end of the season, enabling them to run an Indy Lights car for him. He's hoping to be able to run a full season next year.
